Summer Riding

Summer Riding - Tour de France - Anderson Peak Performance blog post

Now that Spring is here and we can head outdoors for our everyday fitness, some may take to riding. With the heat coming on sooner rather than later, it is important to take the proper precautions to get the most out of your biking experience.

The audience for this blog is not directed at the pro athlete, yet we can all take some gems from performance cycling to enhance our own ride. In respect to the summer heat…

1) Will you be riding indoors or outdoors?

2) Will you participate in a spin class, a group ride or get on a bike trainer with the only free hour(s) in your day while trying to maintain that life balance?

The goal is to give you some easy tools for your riding kit to:

1)

    • Maximize experience by improving technique and efficiency

2)

    • Decrease risk of injury

3)

    Tips on Hydration and Nutrition

Let’s begin:

1. Regardless where you are riding and whether you are stationary or not, proper form is the foundational essential. Sit at a 90 degree angle in the saddle where you can maximize your airway for more efficient breathing, engage your core for stability in the saddle, and remember to pull up on the pedals as it is as important as pushing down.

Your heel should actually be lower than toes at the bottom of the pedal stroke. Think about the motion of wiping mud off your shoe. I have a dog so I could easily use another analogy! As you increase your speed or tension on the bike, try NOT to rock your torso back and forth on the bike. If your shoulders and arms are moving excessively, this is exactly what you are doing! To remedy this, do not use a white knuckle grip on the handlebars yet keep your shoulders facing forward in a relaxed, position with an elbow angle of 15 degrees, taking tension out of your riding technique helps to reduce overuse injuries.

2. Since you now have proper form to help to reduce injury, I am going to recommend a warm up to increase your heart rate and riding muscles for a minimum of 5-10 minutes. The post-ride warm down is also 5 -10 minutes to reduce heart rate and begin to cool down muscles before you get off the bike. Stretching out your muscles post ride is the best way to prevent injury and unnecessary aches and pains. Check out WaffWeb.com
or Nicole Morell 5 Post-Ride Stretches.

3. Now that you now have the form and stretching of a Pro Cyclist, let’s talk about bike nutrition. The following tips are for rides under one hour.

Pre-Charge: you need about 75-100 grams of carbs. Cereal with dried fruit, oatmeal with bananas or scrambled eggs on toast, honey and milk are also recommended. Timing is everything when it comes to refueling. Make sure you have a water bottle and take a swig every 10 minutes. You may not need to consume carbohydrates or electrolytes to maintain energy or regulate mineral loss in a ride under an hour. To replenish and recover consume a protein and carbohydrate, rich drink or snack within the first 15-30 minutes after exercise. This is the time when you’re riding muscles use the carbs and protein most efficiently and effectively.

Your summer riding kit is now complete. Have a great ride!

May The Tour Be With You.

Lower Back Pain?

Your lower back hurting may not be because of stiffness from sitting at a desk, but from compression on your sciatic nerve.

Many Americans are under the misconception that sciatica is a diagnosis.

The idea that sciatica is a diagnosis may lead to an incorrect assessment and lead some to turn to self-treatment, mainly resting their back. Sciatica is not a diagnosis but is rather a set of symptoms caused from compression on your sciatic nerve.

Sciatica may feel like a bad leg cramp, with pain that feels like a knife, or electrical.

  • The cramp can last for weeks before it goes away.
  • You may have pain, especially when you move, sneeze, or cough.
  • You may also have weakness, “pins and needles” numbness, or a burning or tingling sensation down your leg.
  • If you think you may are experiencing any of these symptoms, do not attempt to self-treat and instead go to your doctor or a chiropractor for a check up. Self-treatment will temporarily alleviate the symptoms, but will not solve the problem. Anderson Peak Performance is passionate to preventing you from unneeded pain and suffering.

You are most likely to get sciatica between the ages of 30 and 50 years.

It may happen as a result of the general wear and tear of aging, plus any sudden pressure on the disks that cushion the bones (vertebrae) of your lower spine.

If you have a history of strenuous or repetitive activity, you may be more prone to sciatica.

For those suffering from sciatica, the cause of the low back pain and leg pain needs to be correctly addressed in order to relieve discomfort.

I.) A Doctor of Chiropractic can remove pressure off the sciatic nerve through gentle chiropractic adjustments.
2.) By reducing pressure on the nerve, patients symptoms and mobility will improve.
3.) To aid her in your treatment, Doctor Anderson has cutting edge diagnostics, specifically the EuMotus. The EuMotus uses infrared technology to analyze your body movement so that Doctor Anderson can customize a care plan specific to your needs.

Here are a few before photos:

The design and build out was a dream come true.  We found this location after months of looking for office space. Anderson Peak Performance is not just an office, it is a destination.  Centrally located at Columbus Circle and 1841 Broadway, this was the former home of Atlantic Records until it moved in 1973 to Rockefeller Plaza.  Atlantic Records at 1841 Broadway was the home of Tom Dowd, a music engineer and producer of some of the most impactful artists. As a result, we felt it was important to bring that history back and added some albums produced here.  Anderson Peak Performance created our own album as we moved from an office to our home, with our logo in record format on our salvaged reception desk in which Dr. Jeannette M. Anderson helped to create.

Our destination is one that is comprised of salvaging, reclaiming, and displaying the past in a modern-day atmosphere.  As a Wellness Centre, the space was designed and focused on helping you support your body through proper holistic care and exercise. Anderson Peak Performance is exactly that. The reception desk was once a mahogany floor that was repurposed.  The paint on that reception desk was actually all of the paint colors that we sampled until we arrived at the primary color of our space.  Even our barn doors were salvaged from being sent to the landfill. We minimized waste on our new home in an effort to keep it green. We repurposed and retrofitted everything from the paint, light fixtures, existing built-in furniture and glass.

Anderson Peak Performance offers a variety of cutting-edge services for acute and chronic issues and injuries.   Our objective is to give you and your body a toolkit to reach your athletic and physical goals.  Over the next few months, we will add supporting wellness practitioners to increase our suite of services and treatments to help keep you in peak physical condition.

Much like the records as you enter, and the record shaped logo on the reception desk, this project will be ongoing and evolve over time. Stay tuned as the Anderson Peak Performance Chiropractic and Wellness Centre, living plant wall, services and products grow to support the needs of our clients and their activities.

Thanks for being a part of the Anderson Peak Performance family, and for your support in helping us to create our home.

In addition, we would like to thank those who have tirelessly contributed to this project. Through their creativity, skill, and determination, they helped make my vision a reality.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeannette M. Anderson, Chiropractor

How To Win A Gold Medal In Your Own Olympic Stadium

Chiropractic has been a big part of the performances of the Olympic athletes competing in the 2016 Summer Games in Rio.

Did you get to see on NBC on Sunday, August 14th, the Swedish golfer Henrik Stenson? He was being adjusted by his Chiropractor on the ground in the middle of the fairway. The unknowing media billed as a “massage”, yet it was a Chiropractic adjustment that helped Mr. Stenson to bring home a Silver medal.

Later, Team USA Track & Field 200 and 400 Meter runner Lashawn Merritt gave his Chiropractor, Dr. Dave Pascal, a huge shout out on NBC. He thanked him for his Chiropractic adjustments being essential for peak performance.

So does the health advantages of Chiropractic care on medal winning athletes from multiple sports and various countries differ from the benefits that you can achieve through Chiropractic? NO! They are the same.

Why?

As humans, we all have a Nervous System. This Nervous System communicates with all the muscles, ligaments, tendons and organs in the body. If they don’t work, you don’t work!

Do you have spinal tension and muscular stress in your body? Is it a result of all of your personal and professional commitments in today’s fast-paced world? If the answer is yes, you are the same as an Olympian.

The stressors on an athletes’ body and mind are different than ours. Yet they can create the same deleterious effects on the physical form. Spinal and muscular pressure can cause dysfunction in the nervous system, decreased muscle function and altered biomechanics. I, Dr. Jeannette M. Anderson, have worked with high performance athletes. I’ve found you don’t have to be an Olympian to win your own gold medals with a lifestyle of Chiropractic care and wellness!

These benefits take time. Through repetitive adjustments and biomechanical correction, we can improve an individual’s performance. It’s a program of care similar to training for an event, whether it be a marathon, an event for charity, an active trip, Ironman or the ability to get up in the morning without pain. It took time to get this way and it takes time to train the body how to perform and be well.

How do I know?

I have 26 years of experience in high performance care. Also, I have been the Team USA Chiropractor for the 2004 Summer Olympics, 2013 Medical Director for the US Paracycling World Championships, USOC Lake Placid Volunteer Medical Staff, and Medical Team Chiropractor for the National High School Track & Field Championships for over 20 years. I have run almost a dozen marathons and am an avid biker, skier and hiker. My body is at peak performance because I live a healthy lifestyle where Chiropractic care is the core essential of my performance program.

So a big shout out for all the Olympians in Rio that utilize the benefits of Chiropractic adjustments for performance and Olympic medals. An even bigger shout out for the Chiropractors who, as part of the medical team help the athletes live their dreams… AND YOU CAN TOO!
